Funny Thai Music Video – The Forgetful Buffalo

I refer to this music video as ‘The Forgetful Buffalo’ where the music video tells the story of a girl who goes to work in Bangkok and she returns  to her hometown during a festival. I think the start of this video really sets up the song to let you know this video is going to be a bit of fun.

The song is a little more complex than what might first appear if you look and analyse the lyrics. A couple of things to understand – “Kwai” in Thai means buffalo but is also used as an insult meaning “stupid”. If you really want to emphasise the insult, you might say “Kwai Noi” meaning baby buffalo. The view is that buffalo’s are stupid creatures and being called one means you are basically a stupid animal. Kwai Noi is just an emphasis on the line of thinking that if a buffalo is stupid, a baby one is even more stupid and clueless. I think a little bit harsh on the poor buffalo’s (I mean the actual animals) in this world, but that’s how it is. I strongly recommend for those who don’t know already – DO NOT go around calling Thai people buffalo’s – some will take the insult very personally and you never know where that will end up going wrong for you.

Secondly, “tum” means “hit” so when she is singing this, it’s really meaning to be “hit on” ie unwanted advances by guys. I’m planning to write a post soon to discuss this in more depth, but she is basically viewing her old boyfriend back home running up to ‘hit on’ her as being a stupid person. While for this song its more specific to the old boyfriend, the principal can be applied more generally to this sort of situation of a girl returning back home. The reason for this is because now that she is a ‘Bangkok Girl’ she is ‘above’ the locals boys and no longer remembers (or conveniently forgets) where she has come from (meaning her grass roots) and is no longer interested in poor farmers.

The Forgetful Buffalo

By way of conclusion, this is why I’ve titled this post as the “Forgetful Buffalo’, the reason for that is the question that is up for debate… who really is “the Kwai”?. Anyway, enjoy the song and translated lyrics!

I’m Scared of the Buffalo – by Mod Daeng Jiraporn

Guy: Girl, girl… come to play water with me.

Girl: Wait a moment, baby

Girl: Baby, I think that your buffalo is looking at me strange.

Man 2: Brother, your girl is coming back.

I have left my school

I don’t study anymore

I packed my bag and took a bus to work as a daily hire employee in Bangkok

I save the money to build my own bright future

Time flies and I miss my family

So I go back home during the festival

When I arrive home, what is it running to me now?

It’s big and dark. It’s running to me.

(It means there is a guy hitting on her and she doesn’t want him)

Somebody is yelling and somebody is talking

Girl, you have to be careful of the rope and the buffalo. It can’t hold the weight, it will break soon.

Oh the rope just broke, you have to be careful of my buffalo!

Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo

It is big and dark

Can you help me to hold it?

I am afraid of the buffalo. It will hit me.

I am afraid that I can’t run away from the buffalo and it will hit me.

I am afraid that the buffalo will run into me. I am afraid that the buffalo will hit me.

Buffalo hit hit hit hit hit

Man 2: Brother, your girl has arrived and at home now.

So I go back home during the festival

I drop out of the bus

Suddenly there is something running to me

It’s big and dark. It’s running to me

I heard somebody yelling and talking

Be careful! …the rope is going to break.

The buffalo will hit you

Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo

It’s too big. The buffalo is big and dark.

Can you help me to hold it?

I am afraid of the buffalo. It will hit me.

I am afraid that I can’t run away from the buffalo and it will hit me.

I am afraid that the buffalo will run into me. I am afraid that the buffalo will hit me.
